Michaeleans join advocacy vs human trafficking

Human trafficking is the illegal transit or displacement of persons, according to the International Labor Organization (ILO).

In the Philippines, ILO reported that thousands of children and women are trafficked everyday.
Such was the problem that advocate Cecilia Oebanda attempts to fight in her foundation, Visayan Forum.

Saint Michael’s College of Laguna pledged to assist the foundation thru the iFight movement.
The partnership was done July 3 during the campus tour led by Oebanda herself.

Forum was started by Sr. Cecilia Espenilla, Siena College, who talked about the types, modes and recent news about human trafficking.

She also talked about Sweetie, an internet avatar created by the children’s rights organization Terres des Homes from Netherlands to lure Internet predators.

Next to talk was Oebanda, who shared her recent operations to catch human traffickers.

She also showed a clip of her interview with the rescued victims from the Center of Hope.

Youth Volunteer Ernest Dela Cuesta talked about the objectives of the iFight program and gave students some reminders on how to avoid being a victim of human trafficking.

A victim also shared her experiences of human trafficking.

Students were asked to rise and raise their right arm and shout “iFight against human trafficking! iFight! iFight! iFight!” Oebanda led the chant.

College President, Dr. Lourdes Almeda-Sese pledged donations to the Center of Hope for the victims of human trafficking.

Signing of the Memorandum of Agreement of the partnership between SMCL and the Visayan Forum were held after the program.

MICHAELEANS JOIN IFIGHT FREEDOM WALK

Michaeleans led by Z Club of Laguna members with its president, Jean Isabelle Alvarez and selected National Service Training Program (NSTP) students marched for the victims of human trafficking at Quezon Memorial Circle, July 29.

Dubbed as the “Walk for Freedom” with the theme, “Wakasan ang Human Trafficking, Ito’y Ating Tungkulin,” this project was in in partnership with the Visayan Forum in celebration of the “World Day against Human Trafficking”.

Oebanda led the marchers participated in by non-government organizations, schools, and supporters of the cause.

Participants from different schools, women’s groups, advocacy groups and the iFight Forum volunteers led the march and the chanting to instill public awareness in human trafficking and modern day slavery.

Michaeleans were in the frontlines carrying their banners and posters.

They were noticed by the national media thus they were featured in two television stations in their news.

SMCL took part in spreading awareness about human trafficking and to help those who are victimized by human trafficking here and abroad and to put a stop to it.
